High Jump Question 2


How do I execute a Straddle Jump or Scissors Jump?
(Give me the pointers)

  1. I would like to try the straddle jump. Here are the pointers:
    1. Jump at the right moment in order to allow the maximum height of the centre of gravity to be just above the bar.
    2. To remember to push off with your master foot to achieve maximum force
    3. When jumping, twist the body to allow it to flip over, giving yourself some more momentum

  2. I would like to try the straddle jump next lesson, but so far i have been jumping forwards and doing forward tug-jumps
    Straddle:
    1. Try to run as fast as you can as you need momentum.
    2. Upon reaching the pole, make a quick turn while bending your knees and take off.
    Scissors:
    1. Try to run as fast as you can as you need momentum.
    2. Upon reaching the pole, rotate your body 90 degrees and jump with the leg that was closer to the pole jumping and landing first.

  3. To execute a scissor jump
    -it should be nearly 30-50 degrees from the bar when starting the run
    -dont go too fast as u only need to travel horizontallly
    -face forward
    -when the take-off leg is nearer to the bar,hold it straight and swing it to the air.
    -Need to be done very quickly
    -it resembles like a scissors action
    -Landing is on your feet
    To execute straddle jump
    -Unlike scissors jump,in straddle you have to face down and roll over the bar
    -There is parallel straddle and a more diving version
    -Firmly plant your heel before take-off
    -allow you body to move over your foot and thrust both arms upwards as you push of the ground.
    -After take-off bend your lead leg at your hip and knee,swing it upward and quickly straighten it to a horizontal position.
    -Your body should start to roll over the bar.
    -While doing so,thrust your head,right arm and shoulder down.
    -It helps to lift your hips
    -Your momentum will cause you to rotate and land on you back

  4. I would like to try the straddle jump during the next lesson.
    -We should gain a momentum by running fast so that we land on our back after the jump.
    -Try to use the stronger leg to propel you up into the air.
    -Arch your back and keep your legs drooped down until your torso is descending

  5. I would like to try the straddle jump.
    -You should run as fast as you can to the bar as possible in order to build up momentum.
    -You should also lean at the right angle before jumping towards the bar.
    -Remain at the same speed throughout the run.
    -Get the right speed for jump before the curve.
    -Rotate your body in the air to make more momentum.

    Pointers:
    - Takeoff point should be around a 45 degrees angle from pit.
    - Face forward
    - As you start to run, focus on the momentum and not the speed
    - Go as close as possible to the bar, stretch out take-off leg and swing it across the bar along with the other leg following, resembling a scissor-like movement.
    - Keep head and upper body upright
    - Finally, land on your free foot or on your butt.

    Points to take note:
    - The point where you jump should be around 45 degrees angle from the pit
    - Look in front
    -Focus on the momentum and not the speed while running
    - Go as close as possible to the bar, stretch out take-off leg and swing it across the bar along with the other leg following, resembling a scissor-like movement.
    - Keep head and upper body upright
    - Finally, land on your feet or on your back

    In a straddle jump, the athlete will face down while as they roll over the bar unlike the scissors jump where the athlete would be facing upwards

    Here is a link to a slow motion video of an olympic athlete doing the high jump. I would like to try the scissors jump.
    For the scissors jump, it is important to make sure your preferred foot is the one one uses to take off.

  11. I would like to try a straddle jump. The straddle jump is kicking the lead leg high and above the bar, then rolling the body over it.
    Here are some pointers:
    1. Run fast to gain momentum, and use your master leg to swing over the bar, followed by the other leg.
    2. Keep your body and head upright.
    3.Land on your feet or butt.

  14. I would like to do the straddle jump in the next lesson. Here are the pointers for the jump:
    1) Run as fast as you can towards the bar.
    2)At a good distance from the bar, launch yourself with your master foot.
    3) In mid-air, you twist yourself but make sure your legs don't hit the bar.

    1) run as fast as you can towards the bar
    2)take off, wrapping off your limbs around the bar
    3) when you clear the height, face the floor and your arms draped

  16. I would like to try the scissors jump.Here are some pointers:
    1.The approach (or run-up) in the Scissors is a straight line at 30 to 50 degrees to the bar, jumping over the lowest point of the bar which is usually the centre
    2.Horizontal acceleration should be complete by take-off, with the shoulders held high and the take-off leg (the one pushing into the ground) flexing at delivery.

  17. I would like to try the scissors jump in the next lesson but if I am not comfortable I shall continue to do the straddle jump .Here are the pointers (scissors):
    - First run slow (for the first few steps) then increase your speed towards the bar
    - Stretch the take-off leg and swing it across the bar with the other the leg (looks like scissors)
    - Keep the head and the body upright
    - Lastly, land on our feet
    Pointers (straddle):
    - First run slow (for the first few steps) then increase your speed towards the bar
    - lift off with our preferred foot while wrapping our body with our hands
    - Have a relatively flat or arched back over the bar
    - land on our back

  18. I would like to try the straddle jump. We should run slow, then slowly increase our speed until the jump-off, then jump on the balls of your feet, which results in more momentum, so that you will be able to clear the jump more successfully.
